I wish the horsey ride scene of riding Kantmiss in the cave weren't covered by stupid blocks...but I also am willing to bet that idiot was walking as she crawled the entire 5second sequence anyway so whatever. I give this film 3/5 for incorporating heterosexual ponyplay (with a GIRL AS THE BOTTOM) but nothing more. Sorry folks the humors a 2/5 and kinda obvious. From the folks who brought you Meet the Spartans, Vampires Suck, Epic Movie, etc., now comes The Starving Games - a deliciously humorous spoof of The Hunger Games (and a few other recent films) that can actually stand on its own merits. The casting is impeccable and spot on. Indeed - the female lead claims to have actually gone to the tryouts for the original Hunger Games only to find out that the role had already gone to Jennifer Lawrence. In her own words, "things had now come full circle since this is the part she played in The Starving Games". From the casting to the costumes, names, makeup, and settings, one might think you were watching the real thing. After watching The Hunger Games for the second time on TV only a few days earlier, I couldn't stop laughing. The Starving Games may be a parody but it is also a positive nod to THG.From the very beginning, when "Kantmiss" volunteers to take her sister's place in the games, to her arrival in the Capital, her way of hiding from or dispatching her opponents, her budding romance with Peter Marlarkey (how appropriate the name alteration) played by the adorable Cody Christian of Pretty Little Liars fame, the laughs and action proceed at a rapid pace. When the two take refuge in a cave, fall asleep side by side, only to wake up surrounded by a sexually letching Hobbit and his leader, is truly an hysterical moment. Or when "Kantmiss" is told to cut down a hive of bugs on top of her enemies sleeping soundly on the ground below and her aim is not quite accurate; or when the exotic design of the Games master's beard keeps changing and even incorporates a Starbucks logo; or when Kantmiss's home boyfriend (played by the quite handsome Brant Daughtery also from PLL) gets so jealous that he physically invades the soundstage where The Starving Games is being filmed; and on and on. Even The Avengers takes a hit. The ubiquitous Samuel L. Jackson who (along with Liam Neeson) seems to appear in every other movie (and even alludes to that apparent observation) comes across as a cursing latrine sergeant especially when he turns his thunder on Hawkeye who resents the possibility that Kantmiss might replace him among the Avengers. The Expendables (played by some of the best look-alikes Hollywood has to offer) doesn't escape either. The joy and fun of The Starving Games is the fact that it can make you laugh without being disrespectul or nasty. It does what many of us might think or like to say but can't - as in the fiery dress of Kantmiss that nearly burns her to a crisp but does nothing but wow the crowd in THG. I highly recommend this film to anyone who needs a good laugh and will get plenty without having to get a headache from a noisy action film soundtrack or trying to figure out the nonsense of the latest sci-fy movie. Enjoy it even more with your favorite beverage. One caveat: It is rated as a PG-13 movie but is much closer to an R.I am notoriously hard on movies. Case in point, I thought Avengers Infinity Wars was a masterpiece but End Game absolutely SUCKED!The fact that I am even writing this review says A LOT and many of my friends would be shaking their heads right now if they knew it was me saying all of this because they KNOW how much I beat up on movies I don't like. This was not at all a perfect movie. But as a filmmaker myself, I can appreciate the effort. I give this film 4 stars because I think the cast and crew did a phenomenal job and clearly had fun.I'm not a fan of The Hunger Games and didn't think those films were great at all. But as far as spoofs go, they did a pretty good job. Plus, I liked the veiled Spongebob reference that I wonder if anyone else got.If you're expecting depth, look away now. If you want to watch a group of filmmakers bring a vision to life, check it out. Budding filmmakers, check this out and get inspired to dare to do something you want to do.I hope the folks who made this movie see this review. Good job, people. Good job!If you watch this looking for background noise while reading or working on something. It serves it's purpose. If your looking for entertainment, look elsewhere. After Not another teen movie and Scary movie 1 & 2. Similar movies were bottom of the barrel. This is that leaky puddle below the barrel. I said hah once when the Avengers died to a throwback gag from the beginning of the movie. I can count on one hand how many times I looked up from what I was doing to look at the screen. Like I said before, perfect background noise. 3 stars for giving me something to ignore while doing something else, but feels better than sitting in a silent room.If a person has not seen the movie this is spoofing, don’t waste your time as you will be in a total fog. The premise of the writers is that if they throw enough jokes against the wall, many will stick and it will be a fun movie. Unfortunately, I think there are too many misses. Too many of the jokes are all too obvious, and hence lack punch. There is also a certain sloppiness in continuity. For instance, when Kantmiss is in the tree being ‘bombed’ with bird droppings, in one scene she is really covered, including her clothes, and in the next immediate scene totally free of any droppings. And that is not the only goof. It is passable entertainment, but nothing to go out of the way for. It really screams very low budget. Not all of the humour was up my street but what I didn't find amusing my daughter just about wet herself laughing at. Must be a generational thing. Good for a lighthearted evenings entertainment.Yes this is a spoof movie and did have some funny moments. I watched this with my 18 year old daughter and we were amused and found this quite light hearted in places. I am pleased I watched it but it's not one I will be keeping. It arrived and worked fine but when it did arrive the dvd was loose in the case and wasn't protected at all. Had a small scratch on the disk but luckily it's okBought as a gift and was enjoyedFound this to be very amusing. Definitely a film you would enjoy if you understand what it's mocking
