Included with the PS 4 game are two free add on packs, the ripper and the Road Warrior pack. This game reminds me of a couple of my games that I previously use to play, the Far Cry and Borderlands series, in terms of gameplay and style and seems to combine some of those elements with some things from Batman, GTA and Fallout, although unlike Fallout, there is very little interaction with NPC characters other than getting missions from them.I like the game but there are some things that are a bit annoying at times. Even after updating to the latest patch, there are still some video glitches that occur from time to time and the camera view gets lost sometimes, which can be a pain when you are in the middle of a fight and you can’t see what is going on around you. There are also occasional locations that have spots that you can get stuck and cannot get out unless you fast travel or restart. One annoyance with that though is when it happened in the middle of a storm, where fast travel is not available. So, I had to either wait out the storm (which I did) until I could fast travel or restart. The controls took me a bit of time getting used to. To me, the car controls, especially with the car battles feels a bit clunky and cumbersome to me. Sometimes the game has issues with aiming with the harpoon and just doesn’t activate for some reason. The car fighting is fun though, especially after the upgrades are added.Although it is no fun to die in the game, the death sequence is a bit disappointing as it doesn’t really show you dying but instead a skull graphic simply saying you died. I would expected a bit more graphic death than just that.Missions can get pretty repetitive, especially the side missions which are, basically, tearing down scarecrows, destroying convoys for hood ornaments, looking for scrap and other items, defusing mines, races and taking over the camps. The camp attacks are fun but there isn’t a whole lot of variation to the camp maps or the scrap locations. The races are ok but limited as well in terms of variety. On the plus side, though, there is plenty to do in the different areas.I wish the climbing mechanics were a little smoother as to climb a ladder you have to hold a button which is sometimes uses for other things leading to accidently dropping something when you mean to climb. Also, trying to climb some areas is a bit frustrating as well as there are areas that look climbable or at least should be but aren’t. This game tries to mark those climbable areas to make them at least noticeable but some are done better than others.Even with some of its annoyances, there is a lot to like as well and I like this game. The graphics are good for the most part (aside from some of the sameness in the camp/scrap location designs) with good details in the desert landscape. I like that the map gives you option to see some details of the areas with the balloon rides so that I don’t have to spend all my time wandering around trying to find different discoverable locations. It doesn’t show everything so it leaves you to discover some things on your own as well. I haven’t had any video framerate slowdowns yet.The cut scenes are cool except that you can’t skip them. Seeing Max fill up his canteen with water or car with gas is cool the first 10 times but quickly grows old when you are forced to watch over and over. The Hunchback is an amusing background character with some of his quotes along with his ability to fix your car and make upgrades for you. I found the dog to be less helpful as so far, I have found him only useful for mine hunting and this is more burdensome as you have to get the Chumbuggy to use him for that purpose. One small irritant to that is if you fast travel to another location, it automatically changes your car back to Max’s. One additional small glitch is that the upgrades sometime switch back to the previous selections when you change cars.It is fun to add upgrades to Max and your car though and there are a lot of different cars to drive and make part of your collection. Each one drives a bit differently. The fighting is ok and can be challenging but once you figure out the pattern and how to parry, it is relatively easy to defeat most sand dwellers. Now, I waited until this was less than 20 bucks but I found it worth that price and a fun game to play. If you like any of the games I mentioned above, then you most likely will like this one.Update: April 27, 2017: I wanted to add a final update now that I have finished the game. I still enjoyed playing the game through, although the side missions were extremely repetitive and pretty basic. I really wish they had some more extensive stories to the side missions other than a simple conversation and either get some loot or do some simple task. The fighting was fun but to me (and I am not a hard-core gamer) relatively simple and easy to figure out on the normal difficulty level. The bosses all attack the same way and was just a matter of roll out of the way, punch 4 or 5 times and repeat until finished, leading to a lack of challenge to even the final bosses. The main quest is relatively short but I found the story very good although it has a bit of a dark ending. I will argue though that the ending was pretty appropriate to Mad Max.There are some addition annoyances such as how it indicates you have 100 percent of something, only to be missing 2 or three items (such as the hood ornaments) or the missing camps in your percentage, even though you have conquered them all only to find out that just because you didn’t pick up a scrap or destroy an insignia, it doesn’t count the camp, leading to a frustrating scan over the map to find out which one. It is also surprisingly easy to max out “Max” with his abilities early on, leaving no reason to worry about Griffa tokens later in the game. Griffa essentially disappears after this, which is too bad as he was a very compelling, mysterious character that could have played a larger role in the game. I really wish they had done more with the tokens over the course of the game. The random storms were initially beneficial for collecting large amounts of scrap but less so after you have built up the car a bit and they became more annoying in their frequency and duration as they sometimes come up in the middle of a mission or a death race, forcing you to just wait it out. Even with my final gripes, I still liked the game and found it fun to play. Maybe not the best in this genre but for less than 20 bucks, it is worth playing.4 stars
