Description

This workbook features a variety of activities to provide hours of engagement and brain stimulation for those with dementia and other cognitive disabilities. After watching a Speech and Language Pathology Therapist work with her stepmom who has dementia due to Alzheimer's, Kathleen created a set of worksheets she could use to practice the activities completed during therapy sessions. She tapped into her years of experience homeschooling to help her create exercises involving speech, eye-hand coordination, math, and verbal skills. Her stepmom loved the activities! Others saw her workbooks and wanted copies, so here they are.Ideal for those in Stages 4-5 of dementia as well as other special needs adults, the workbook uses large print, simple instructions, a variety of brain exercises, and clean, clear images.Exercises include:Identify the ItemsOppositesWhat Comes Next?CategoriesRhyme TimeMazesWord SearchesMathFinish the PhraseI SpyColor and Telland much more! While each exercise can be done independently, many are designed to encourage engagement and conversation between the person and their family or caregivers.Note regarding Solutions: There is no Solutions section in the book. Some exercises include a Word Bank which acts as a Solution. Many exercises contain questions that have more than one answer or the answer is up to the individual completing the exercise. For those exercises where a Solution was deemed necessary, possible answers are found at the bottom of the page up side down.

I am using this book with our adult son who experiences Down Syndrome. I like the variety and the fact that there are easy activities that make the book seem less like "just another workbook mom wants me to do." The easier activities draw his interest and make a good transition to the more challenging pages. I especially like the more open-ended activities that are useful for initiating conversation. The artwork and layout are clean with minimal distraction and the activities are engaging without becoming overwhelming. Sometimes he picks up the book on his own & does the easy pages independently. This book is useful for cognitive challenges of all kinds but could also be used as "school" for a young child who is not quite ready for regular textbook lessons. A very handy low stress resource!
